Frazier Luther Peele, who was born in Hatteras in , was killed instantly in an automobile wreck on July 13th  on NC four miles north of Hatteras Village.
He was a highly respected leader in his community, and was given credit for the first Engelhard to Hatteras Ferry back in the 's. With very little formal education and foresight to see a desperate need for a ferry to cross this island, and no money, Mr. Peele, on a shoestring, started his first ferry for the people there on the Island. Realizing the need, he started a service that eventually brought about this operation to the attention of the State Highway Commission, which later resulted in the State buying the Ferry.
During that year the State acquitted the business which Peele operated on a toll basis. Prior to operating the Hatteras-Ocracoke Ferry, he ran a freight and passenger boat from Hatteras to Engelhard.
In addition to the State position, Peele was an operator of a truck line and a restaurant in Hatteras which bears his name. He was a descendant of one of the oldest and most famous families on the Island. Peele's immediate survivors are his widow, Mrs. Viola Willis Peele; his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Gaskill Peele; three sons: Carl Ludwick of Hatteras; two brothers: Alan Ballance of Elizabeth City, Mrs. Luther Austin and Mrs. Donald Oden of Hatteras; and 9 grandchildren.

Frazier Luther Peele, 63, of Hatteras was killed instantly in a wreck July 13 at Highway 12 four miles north of Hatteras village. Peele, who was driving a Buick Skylark, was traveling south on N. Trooper Britton, who investigated the accident, said that Peele ran across the center line and hit the left rear wheel of the trailer.
Britton said that Stephens ran off the road trying to avoid the accident but was unable to get the trailer off quickly enough. He reported no negligence on the part of Stephens. There was some speculation that he may have suffered a heart attack. Stephens was not injured. Peele was port captain of the Hatteras docks for the ferry run operated by the N. A native of Hatteras, he was the youngest son of the late Frazier and Viola Peele. Mike taught marine biology in the Norfolk Public School System for 28 years. He was an exceptional teacher who excited his students and shared his enthusiasm for an insatiable curiosity about the marine environment.
A master storyteller with a tremendous sense of humor and compassion, Mike touched all of those he encountered. Over a year period, he carried more that students on excursions to the Dry Tortugas off Key West, Florida. There they snorkled, fished, explored and learned in the world's ultimate classroom--a tropical island in the Gulf Of Mexico.
Mike was proud of his culinary skills and thoroughly enjoyed delighting friends with his exotic dishes. For several years he operated the Hatteras Seafood Pavilion, the largest seafood tent ever at Harborfest. He ran the water patrol, issuing fishing reports to tidewater fishermen and he captained numerous sportfishing charter boats in Virginia Beach and along the Outer Banks.
It was common knowledge that he was a devoted husband and father. He loved his wife and four children with a passion. Mike Peele will always be our hero. Survivors include his wife, Jean Howell; his three daughters: Barry Lubin; and a list of relatives and friends too lengthy to mention. Mike declined both a funeral and a memorial service. He will be cremated and his family and select friends will distribute his ashes off Ocracoke Beach.
